I have a windows 8.1 media pc that I want to see from my kitchen joggler (mainly to watch the snooker while doing the washing up!). The joggler is running one of Buzz' fab xubuntu builds (12.4), does anyone use remote desktop viewing software on their jogglers, or can recommend some please?

Remmina has worked well for me: http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=remmina

Although streaming via RDP might not perform as well as you might expect.

Could you stream from Media Center and connect to it via XMBC on xUbuntu?

Unfortunately I don't have Media Centre as you have to buy it in win 8. Didn't realise you could do that though, interesting. What I might want to stream could be in a web browser or some other program so I think I need to show the whole screen / desktop to cover all options.

Thanks for the tip, I'll give Remmina a try!

If all you want to do is watch telly on the Joggler, do you need to stream from a remote server? You could try FilmOn in a web browser and watch UK TV channels. The free channels are SD but that should be OK for the Joggler. There's also a FilmOn addon for XBMC.

Yeh, that would work well for normal tv. I'm just thinking that I might be watching something on catch up and rather than going to iplaya on the joggler via xbmc or web, finding the show then finding the point where I left off, I could just easily open up what I was already looking at. (Also with something like the snooker, you can sometimes tell who's going to win by how much time is left, so I'd rather not fiddle about with that :D )

So yeh, no biggie, just wondered if anyone was already doing something similar with good results.

Here utilize MythTV installed on Ubuntu as a DVR. There are six tuners in it and it'll do multiple recording. It does though sit on the rack in the comm closet and is only accessed remotely via XBMC. That said the live and recorded stuff plays back fine on the Joggler.
