Hi roobarb,
Has the 'patch' functionality been removed from the current version?
I'm trying to add wilberforce's patches (I still have screen blanking issues) but patch returns the following:
patch: command not found
Any thoughts.

None of the dev tools are installed any more (changed with v1.07), but apt isn't going anywhere. Just make sure you do an 'apt-get update' before trying to install anything - the cache is held in RAM now, so is lost on reboot (to save quite a lot of space).

This maybe a completely different issue...but I have found that when I turn off my squeezeplayer via say the web/iphone(ipeng) etc the screen saver for 'off' state only displays for about 5 seconds and then the display goes blank. Is this everyone's experience or is this what you are referring to as blanking issues? is so please let me know what the patch is you are referring to, cheers.
Maybe I am doing something daft, if anyone else could try this and let me know if they get the same behaviour...would at least put my mind to rest
Sad I know, but really would like the clock as the off state rather than a blank screen.
Thanks

Sorry i can't offer any practical help with this but i can confirm that having a clock as the display standby is definitely possible. It's what mine does. Maybe someone with more knowledge can help with what's going wrong for you.
Edit: although i'm not sure what you mean by turn it off with ipeng as i never turn mine off. Just stop the track and press the back button to the main menu screen.

If you turn it 'off', then the display will go off after a few seconds. This is the correct behaviour. If you want the clock screensaver on permanently, just set it to appear 'when stopped' and don't use that little 'off' button.

i guess i am a little confused... if this is the correct behaviour what is the difference between 'when stopped' and 'when off' screen savers? All i do know is I have my harmony remote programmed to issue an 'off' to my SB3/transporter players when I hit the harmony 'off' and this sets the hardware SB to their clock display. and in the past the joggler obeyed the 'when off' screen saver rules, which I have set to clock. Now it briefly displays the clock and then blanks. I would have thought if one wanted this behaviour there is ample setting in the 'when off' screen saver setup?
A work around for me would be to re-program the harmony to issue a 'pause' rather than an 'off' to the SB. not sure if that leaves the transporter in a more powered up state though than an off? probably the same.
I totally respect your work btw and hope I am not coming across as being argumentative, I am just confused as to why this used to work on a much earlier version of your wonderful software on native os and what the purpose of 'when off' screensaver is...
Cheers
David

I think I'm right in saying that 'when stopped' is when Squeezeplay is running but there is no music playing; 'when off' is when Squeezeplay itself has been stopped. How Squeezeplay could serve up a screensaver when stopped is a bit of a mystery to me (and perhaps it can't, which might be the problem).
Have you tried setting the same screen saver for both states?
BTW - I never switch Squeezeplay off, I just stop the music and the clock screen saver kicks in after 5 minutes.

The 'when off' screensaver is a feature from the Squeezebox Touch, which I believe never turns off it's display. You can indeed, on those devices, pick a 'when off' screensaver that will be shown on screen after you hit that little power button in the top left.
However, I always thought that this was a pointless duplication seeing as the 'when stopped' screensaver would achieve exactly the same thing. The 'power' button on the Squeezebox Touch doesn't actually turn anything off - it just marks the device as 'off'; the only actual use being to temporarily disconnect it from synchronisation with other players. In SqueezePlay for Joggler, I took advantage of the power button to shut off the screen properly, seeing as the display accounts for more than half of the Joggler's electricity usage. I just didn't bother removing the 'when off' screensaver option.
Perhaps I will in the next version, as this confusion has cropped up once before.

Thanks roobarb! - that explains it perfectly. I think your logic is spot on with regard to device usage and power consumption.

That roobarb! I agree with your logic too, I think the way logitech implemented this was more a backward compatibility feature with the classic and transporter range. This is where the concept of pause (stop playing music) and ‘off’ (really a fake standby) comes from. I still have a slight worry that 'pause' is a ‘worse’ state for my transporter than 'off/standby' but that is probably because I am of an age where pause involved tape machines to 'strain' with idler wheels getting squashed out of shape!!! So what I will do is re-programme my harmony remote to issue a pause rather than an off rf signal when powering off for the evening. This will put the transporter into a pause state and set the joggler into ‘when stopped' state, and I will get the clock
I could argue of course the way logitech implemented it works for all use-cases too, in that there is a blank screen option as one of the screen savers so if one defaulted the 'when off' screen saver to this state for those that want to save the planet and for those that want a clock they could change the setting so that when they power off (standby really), they get a clock. But I am not that pedantic...you have done some amazing work here and I will be making a donation....thanks again

Is there a way of dimming the screen like in pnpiii?
Edit: sorted.

People this squeeze os solved all my issues with the pnp iii release. The new open peak setup seemed to cause drop outs when playing music in squeeze. Anyway I am happy with this little os apart from one thing. I have the installed to internal usb and have a 32 gig usb pen drive in the external (same setup as pnpiii). The issue is the music art work id missing even though it shows up under my old setup.....any ideas ?....

Can anyone suggest why I can't install Squeezeplay OS? I'm trying a variety of different USB sticks (which work fine for flashing other ROMs).
If I try to run the 'external USB' version, nothing happens - the Joggler just freezes at the O2 screen.
In fact I'd prefer the internal version, freeing up the USB port for a soundcard - but when I try to install the internal version, the install hangs with this yellow text on the black screen:
Booting 'O2 Joggler Reflashing Tool v1.09
[Linux-bzImage, setup=0x3600, size=0x375110]
Video mode: 800x480-32
Frame buffer base: 0x1fc00000
Video line length: 3200
[Initrd, addr=0x178cc000, size=0x4cbc5a]

There was a similar query from rahulg247 back in March, but I don't think it ever got resolved. Any ideas?
The Joggler runs PnPIII fine, so I could always stick with that - but the OCD part of me would like to strip away everything apart from Squeezeplay for this particular Joggler. Any advice would be gratefully received!

From what you've described, it sounds like some kind of hardware problem. If it was just the latest SqueezePlay OS then I wouldn't be ruling out the software (although it is being quite widely used already), but the fact that the Reflash tool isn't running for you as well definitely points to a problem with your setup somewhere.
How are you writing the images to the USB sticks? Actually, scrub that - if they're booting, then you're doing it right. I know you've tried a few, but most of these issues really do boil down to a USB device problem. I build everything using an external desktop hard drive connected over USB - do you have anything else you could try running the software from?

Thanks for the reply. This is my second Joggler, and I'm a real novice, but I've gathered they can move in a mysterious way...
It wasn't booting when I got it, but I've successfully flashed it with PnPIII and it's working well. So it looks like it's capable of taking a flashing from a USB stick. But the Kingston & Sandisk sticks that worked for PnPIII don't work for SqueezeplayOS.
I do have an external USB drive that I can use to experiment with. So I guess I'd just use WinDisk Imager to write the image to the external drive, just as if it were a great big USB stick? I'll give that a try tonight.
I'm really just tinkering at this point - I want the Joggler to be a Squeezeplayer attached to my lounge stereo. In that respect PnPIII will work fine, using your Squeezeplay app that's already built in (and which is great, by the way). But the compulsion to tinker is a strong one...
cheers!
Simon

I might be wrong here Simon but I think to use a usb hdd to write an image you first have to plug in a usb stick then after starting disk imager swap the cables
Please jump in someone if this is wrong as I am going from what I remember reading, not tried myself....
Good luck

Yup, exactly like that - you'll only see the same amount of free space (because the partition sizes are deliberately set small) but it should be fine. You're better using one with an external power supply if possible, as it's hit and miss whether a 2.5" portable drive (I'm assuming that's what you've got) will spin up using the power from a single USB socket. I use a desktop 3.5" drive, but it's connected to an old Dell PSU so doesn't draw from the Joggler.
Good luck!

Yes that's right, but it will only work if the system assigns the same drive letter to both devices (USB stick and HDD). If, for example the stick is assigned the drive letter
H: but the hard drive is assigned the letter
K: the swap trick won't work; Windiskimager needs to be fooled that it is still working with the same device after the swap. This was learned through bitter and frustrating experience.
This shouldn't be a problem because most Windows computers will assign a device the next available letter and if you remove one device and insert the other the same drive letter is assigned to the new device. However, if both devices are assigned their own unique letter all is not lost; In Windows Disk Management tools you can force the system to assign a letter to a device when it is attached; in this case you should assign the hard disk the same drive letter as the system assigns to the USB stick.
A 4 gig image written to a 500 gig hard drive will give you the same usable disk space as if you had written it to a 4 gig stick; the remainder of the hard disk will be unformatted and useless unless you create a new partition in the empty space or resize the linux partition with Gparted.
