Prob best to go for the btrfs compressed version. If you're running Windows just extract the image file using 7zip & write it to your flash drive using Win32diskimager http://launchpadlibrarian.net/26054051/ ... -win32.zip (you can also use the same program to make a backup image of your flash drive once you've finished tweaking it).

Once you've booted the Joggler from it I recommend enabling Remote Desktop then you can login to it from Windows using Tightvnc http://www.tightvnc.com/ - this is much easier than fiddling about with the virtual keyboard. I also recommend updating the wireless driver http://www.jogglerwiki.com/forum/viewto ... river#p291 and installing gparted via Synaptic Package Manager.

BuZz has done an amazing job with this distro & it includes Squeezeplay & XBMC. You should also install the tvcatchup addon for XBMC. The BBC iPlayer addon is already installed.

chelseagirl wrote:I do want to give linux a go, definitely. In fact, I'm just waiting for a 4GB USB stick to arrive as the biggest I had was 1GB! So with that in mind ..... which is the best version to use? Presumably not Jolicloud! Are there simple idiot proof instructions out there on how to install and set it up?
I wouldn't rule out Jolicloud because some people love it. I use the Joggler now mainly for Squeezeplay and XBMC and my preference for the other BuZz distros is purely because these apps are available from the desktop. In JoliOS you need to add XBMC and Squeezeplay as local apps (they are installed but not visible to JoliOS until you do this), thereafter you need to open the local apps folder before running them. This is one more step than I really like but for others it's a small price to pay for all the other JoliOS apps and functionality. JoliOS is also the most finger-friendly distro by far.

As for trying out the distros, they are VERY easy to use. Download the image file, unzip it with 7-zip (or any other zip program that can handle gz files) put your stick in a USB slot on your PC, open up Win32DiskImager, choose your drive and the "img" file you want to write, then hit the "Write" button and wait till it finishes.

After the image is written to your stick, switch off the Joggler, plug in your USB stick, power up and your Joggler should boot into your new operating system. The OS resides on the stick and doesn't interfere with the O2 Joggler software.

Writing the image to the stick is such an easy process that you can try all of BuZz's distros quite easily and then stick to the one you like.

The only caveat to trying out lots of different images is that it's a bit of a pain to get Windows to wipe all the partitions on the flash drive - it will see only the first (FAT32) partition & ignore the rest. I've uploaded an image that you can flash with Win32diskimager & will overwrite the bootsector of your flash drive but be VERY careful you select the correct drive letter. It's at http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1107587/bootsector.img

If you go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management you can find your USB stick on the list of the installed drives. You can now right-click on each partition on the stick and remove them very easily (including linux partitions). Be careful though that you have definitely chosen your USB stick because you can very easily wipe a system drive if you're slapdash.

Once you've deleted all the partitions you can right click and choose to format the stick; a wizard will appear and you can just format with the default options. Your stick will now be ready to write another image to.

------------------ EDIT -------------------

The above instructions are what I do in Win XP, I'm not sure what the Windows 7 procedure is but I'm guessing it's similar, or identical.

I've previously had problems doing it this way with Windows 7 - I can't remember if it was the ext4 or btrfs partitions I couldn't shift but flashing the bootsector is definitely easier & quicker!

Hmm going to sho my ignorance here because I have no idea what flashing the |USB drive is!!

Anyway, my USB stick has arrived and I'm just unzipping the Ubuntu image, wish me luck!

I don't fully understand the instructions for doing some things though ... like changing the heat throttle point. What does "boot up the image" mean?
(Srry to be so thick, but I'm keen to learn!)

aren't we bad for jargon?

Download the disk image & unzip it with 7zip or similar. Download Win32diskimager & unzip that too. Open the Win32DiskImager folder you have just unzipped & click on Win32DiskImager.exe. Select your USB flash drive letter from the dropdown arrow. Then click on the folder icon & navigate to your unzipped Ubuntu disk image & select it. Click on Write & let it do its stuff (around 10 mins). Remove the USB stick from your PC, stick it in the Joggler then power it up. Next, be amazed!

EDIT - if you get an error message like you mentioned just try again but this time right-click on Win32DiskImager.exe and select "run as administrator" if using Win7. It can sometimes take a few goes to do it.

Thanks, am trying it running as administrator now. I worked out the disk imager software, it's the heat throttling thing I don't quite get ... I understand how to telnet in to give commands, but am not sure about "Boot up the image and enter a terminal and type....."
Sorry, and thanks for being so patient with me!!

I think you can actually edit the relevant file from Windows, just open it in Notepad & add the relevant line given on the Ubuntu download page. But you may not even need to do that, just try it & see if it runs OK. I may upload the relevant file later & you can just paste it into the appropriate folder.

EDIT - stick the USB drive in your PC, open Boot, rename the grub.cfg file to grub.cfg.old, download this version http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1107587/grub.cfg & paste it into the same folder. My file raises the CPU threshold from 70 to 75 deg & enalbes a more verbose (i.e. more scrolling text) boot.

which USB stick did you buy. I wonder if it's another undersized stick :/ if so, you will need a smaller image. This is a smaller one of ubuntu - if you want to try jolios I can make a smaller one of that as a workaround. If you like using linux it's worth getting an 8gb stick. you can get a small and fast 8gb stick for around £15

It's a Kingston Datatraveler 4GB. Windows Exporer says it has 3.98Gb.
But I've just tried Mint and that's done the same thing .... so maybe you're right and it's undersized. What a con!!!

If you do have a smaller image that I could give a go that would be fab ..... I only really use my Joggler for Spotify and radio, don't know if I'd actualyl use anything else on an operating system until I try!

Thanks. I had a go with the Ubuntu one last night but to be honest I don't think it's for me, found it very difficult to control, several times I got into programmes that appeared to have no way out of other than to pull the plug! Couldn't work out how to get Squeezeplayer to work either, because I want the server and Spotify etc. Have gone back to the original OS now, but will give Joli a go.

I'm still a bit confused.

Is it possible to run the iPlayer with OnDemand shows, the Spotify Server and XBMC all off the native OS?

Also, what's the point of the flash capability if the only browser you can use on the native OS is Opera which does not do flash?

I think you meant Squeezebox Server (not Spotify; you can run Spotify through a Squeezebox Server plugin).

The answers to your questions above are: Yes (for iPlayer) Yes (for Squeezebox Server) and No (for XBMC).

The point of Flash capability is that the stock OS runs using Flash apps. iPlayer and Youtube use Flash video. There is a SWF Manager app (available from P'n'P) that has some Flash games and allows you to add links to others.

Opera does do Flash but not Opera Mobile that the Joggler uses. I must admit that a Flash enabled browser would be great, but I don't know if one will be released that can run on the Stock OS.

Thanks Gegs,

I meant both actually - I will try and get the squeezebox server on the joggler until I can get my NAS ordered.

However, my issue at the moment is that I have the squeezeplay installed and through the Triode plugin I have spotify working. i can't get spotify to work without my computer being on.
