ICS installed on Internal Flash!

Post by offbeatdave »

Thanks to mijuu, I have now been able to install ICS on the Joggler's internal flash. What I did was...

*Download the ICS Alpha 2 and the Easy to Use Internal package from http://www.mporting.com/download/

*Unzipped the ICS Alpha 2 to a Fat32 USB stick and then copied the files from the Internal package over the top.

*Booted into Ubuntu on the Joggler via a hub and used GParted to format the internal flash to fat32

*Inserted the android stick into the hub

*In terminal, copied across the files from the Android USB stick using

Code: Select all

sudo mount /dev/mmcblk0p1 /mnt
sudo cp -r /media/NAMEOFUSBSTICK/* /mnt
sudo umount /mnt
It took a few minutes to copy across. I then rebooted the Joggler (minus USB sticks) and was presented with the Android logo and then initial set up, including language selection.

This is all working well at the moment (well, 1 hour in anyway!) BBC News app from Google Play is looking good, as is the Sky Sports News app.

Not really sure what to benchmark it against, but seems as quick as stuff on the stock OS at present.

I would have got further by now, but it took me a while to work out how to add widgets on ICS. On older Androids it was long press in a space, but I didn't realise that on ICS you just go to the main menu and then the Widget tab! Bit of an Android novice - still running Symbian on my Nokia phone!

wow! that's incredible!! well done! i don't like the idea of running off an external usb stick as i have a 2 year old boy and i don't want him ripping it out!

i have a few touch screen educational games on my android phone he uses and could use the joggler - the only problem is it uses mains rather than batteries... but still!

this is great! please let me know if you are able to listen to radio / music / play videos / stream iplayer/netflix etc

i guess we will need to wait for ics for intel to mature for a bit until most things work but amazing progress!

I ask Mijuu about 480 mb DATA.IMG and 256mb SDCARD.IMG for internal package
( http://www.mporting.com/2012/03/ics-4-0 ... /#comments )

He say me do this in terminal :

dd if=/dev/zero of=data.img bs=480000 count=1024
mkfs.ext4 data.img
dd if=/dev/zero of=sdcard.img bs=256000 count=1024
mkfs.vfat sdcard.img

but i am windows user now ,i have no terminal...

Can somebody do it and upload files here? (i think in archive it will be 5-6mb, maybe less)

Hi Dave,

Do you still have Android running successfully on the internal flash?

Nah, to be honest it was fun for a bit but wasn't as usable for what I wanted (quick web, web radio, news at the touch of a button, e-mail at the touch of a button, iPlayer, weather, timer) as the Joggler and not as nice looking to be honest. That's one of the reasons that I spent a fair bit of time working on PnP III. I guess I really like the simplicity of the Joggler OS!

Hi
I wonder if you would mind helping me. Im not really familiar with ubuntu but I followed your instructions to the letter for installing android onto internal flash.
However when I type in the second command line it comes back..

cp: cannot stat ' /media/android/* ': no such file or directory

I named my usb 'android' , do you have any idea what i am doing wrong? I would appreciate any advice you could offer.

Thank You

If you're having an issue with space on the Joggler trying to install to internal memory I am guessing that it is because the current ICS image available for download from mporting is 4.0.4 Alpha 3 from June 2012, whereas the image I was using was Alpha 2, and is potentially a slightly different size when unpacked.

Bit of a long shot, but does anyone still have an image of Alpha 2? The mporting website is no longer active.

It's scary how these things disappear after all the hard work that goes in to them .
I'm currently after the last Joli OS build and the last Linux Mint that was done but they are AWOL also :-(

Would BuZz still have copies of those? They used to be hosted on his site, but it only has Ubuntu Trusty now (as I'm sure you're aware)
