Well I can only think of this, which I have not tried on a legacy installation

I mostly use external sticks (for the OS) nowadays and a usb hub if I want to use an external usb DAC.

Thanks. Weirdly, I just turned it on in the order I usually do and it worked. I'll see how it goes.
