Yes, it does solve that! Though not on the Ubuntu image, it'll be a Debian Bullseye image as Bionic is the last Ubuntu release to fully support 32-bit. The link earlier takes you to a "pre-release" version that works fine as a base operating system, but the "of-" scripts have not been tidied up yet. Been trying to find time these last couple of weeks, but it's been so busy!

If it's really wanted I could roll out some more Ubuntu Bionic images with the updated 5.10 kernel, but I'll likely not be maintaining Bionic any longer. Especially as Debian Bullseye puts us on par with the Raspberry Pi for many things, so help from their forums is potentially more directly applicable here.

It is compiled with kernel 5.4 and is meant to be installed on an external USB drive.
This thread is more about Debian Bullseye and kernel 5.10. You can install these images either on the internal flash or an external stick, they can handle both locations.

Come to think of it, a quicker way of getting something useful into people's hands may simply be to update the build system for kernel 5.10 and have it create Bionic images in the meantime. Ha, maybe should have thought of that earlier.

A few tweaks later and the build system is hopefully putting together an Ubuntu Bionic image with the 5.10 kernel. I've already updated the links on the website, so with any luck that'll stop being a 404 page soon. Just keep an eye on the log, it takes a while to compile.

I'm stepping out for a tick now, so no promises it'll complete successfully! :lol:

Woah, nice work! I stopped using my Joggler last year when it started crashing a lot for reasons I couldn't be bothered to try and diagnose but I'll try resurrecting it with this new OS and a new flash drive. I think I know the answer given the infamy of the GM500, but I'll ask anyway because why not, what's situation with hardware acceleration of graphics and video playback? The use cases for my Joggler when it was running needed OpenGL and H2.64 hardware decoding and occasionally hacking a Kodi add-on to make it work again because I couldn't just update Kodi viewtopic.php?p=32256#p32256

Sadly unchanged. The GMA500 is a PowerVR based GPU and I get the impression that it's the licensing between Intel and Imagination Technologies that prevents any meaningful code being released. That which is available hasn't compiled successfully for a long time (Kernel v2?) so we're still CPU bound for graphics. Thankfully the Intel Atom can decode 800x480 H.264 fast enough for smooth playback in native resolution (it'll handle 720p if the encoding isn't too tricky) but that's no help for OpenGL. :(

Installed newest OS / Squeezeplayer (Ubuntu Bionic (Kernel 5.10) for OpenFrame) on my O2 Joggler here.

Wrote image to a 32Gb tiny USB stick. Installed WiFi stuff. Time zone. Installed Squeezeplayer and rebooted.

Squeezeplay came up right away.

Only concern is that I have a loud buzz on the audio via internal speakers and speaker jack when at the Squeezeplayer menu.

When I plug in the external audio the internal speakers remain on. Other than that it's running great and same as previous version and now with a new Kernal.

So took the USB stick to another O2 Joggler / Squeezeplayer. No buzz at all now except that the sound continues to play on internal and external speakers.

Went to the Alsa Mixer and tinkered a bit with muting but do not see any features relating to muting on the Line out stuff.

I was able to turn off the local speaker sound plugging in the sound jack. It also works locally now removing the sound jack doing a couple of things...

Hello thank you for doing this ubuntu port. I would dearly like to use the Joggler as a graphics client for kodi running on a raspberry pi with 512MB. Kodi on my android phone works well as a client of the pi kodi server.

On the ubuntu joggler I tried sudo apt update && sudo apt install kodi and to my surprise the install worked. However when I try to run it, not surprisingly, I get

ERROR: Unable to create GUI. Exiting

Obviously I cannot try it from the screen because it is booting off the usb in plugged into the port. I thought maybe if I connnected a usb hub I could have the os-usb, a keyboard and a mouse plugged in and I tried connecting a powered raspberry pi usb hub using a rare usb-A to usb-A cable, but that doesnt work. The joggler screen lights up when I plug it in with the joggler power supply disconnected - so I guess I am lucky that the joggler still works.

I am not particularly technical but once I had installed Plex on reboot the joggler booted into that GUI, So I imagine it is possible with Kodi. How would I try that? Is there any possibility of adding kodi to the of-install list? Sorry if this is very naive. Regards, Robert

That's interesting, I wonder if anything has changed in the latest kernel release because that behaviour is exactly what I observed as being fixed now.

You'll need to install xserver too, it's available in of-install. Give that a whirl and see if you can fire Kodi up after that.

No promises it'll run smoothly due to the lack of OpenGL mentioned above, but worth a try.

I installed that but get the same error - presumable because I can only use putty for access with the usb drive plugged into the joggler. I imagine I would have to use of-settings with some sort of autologin but that will have to wait until after Easter. Anyway I appreciate your fast response. Many thanks, Robert

What EFI/BIOS were you using?

This is an original O2 Joggler with only the Avaya EFI bios and Realtek chip mac update using an external 32Gb USB stick (Tiny Samsung one).


In alsamixer there should be an option for muting... I think it's Line Out + Speaker or something like that. Not near a Joggler at the mo, so can't check.

First thing I tried was the alsamixer. There is no option for line out and speaker on it.

Thinking back now the internal design of the Openpeak1 was different than the O2 Joggler. The Openpeak1 had a Zigbee and DECT chip and I think a different Realtek audio chip? The Openpeak 2 also had a battery for the CMOS and SIM card slot traces and micro SD slot traces on it. Most of my Openpeak 1's are running Seabios and boot from a 16Gb SSD to Windows embedded. These run touchscreen software originally written for Microsoft CE. Homeseer touch and Leviton OmniPro touch software.

I am not doing anything currently with my OpenPeak 2 devices and still have one totally apart to tinker with.

Got XBMC running nicely years ago using the Openpeak 2 removing the combo mini PCiE WLAN / BT card with a Crystal HD mini PCiE 1080HD video card.

Did get XBMC running on a custom 14.X Ubuntu build posted here on the forum years ago. It was slow.

Today use 2 HD Homerun OTA devices (4 tuners) with works great with MythTV / KODI and current versions of Ubuntu / Windows 11.
IE: Little TV boxes stream 4K and video fine from HDHomerun / Internet.

Off on a tangent now....

I do not hang tablets on walls here with batteries. That said found and using the HP Elitepad G2 1000 working fine with my automation running Ubuntu 20.04 and Windows 11 dual booting. Purchased a few of these for less than $100 USD that needed batteries.

Recently also found Visix touchscreen displays (visix axis-tv-1000p) meant to be mounted on a wall. Very nice looking. Custom bios in these with a Jetway JNF3A motherboard which I have updated to 8Gb / new SSD and WLAN / BT card. Glass screen. You can pick these up for around $50 now. You can run Ubuntu 20.XX and Windows 11 on these fine. These are POE powered with 2 NICs and added a combo Intel WLAN / BT card for keyboard entry.

Recently (last week) picked up an Asus V161 AIO very thin for wall mounting computer. Not sold anymore and discontinued. I picked up new old stock here for $100 USD. This computer also runs latest Ubuntu and WIndows 11. It is very tablet like without the batteries.

For KODI these days run CoreElec on tiny "el cheapo" Android TV boxes. These do well with built in Gb and WLAN / BT cards and 4K. NOT running Android.
These "el cheapo" Android TV boxes are sold everywhere and tiny and do better than RPi's. They boot via USB / SD card but you can write the OS to the built in eMMC card easy enough.

I am also running CoreElec on two automobiles. Customized with Python scripts that tap in to the automobile bus and display Kodi on automobile HU. The automobile Intel micro PC has a 1TB drive on it with an custom built HW interface for Video and audio.

IE: HU menus are Radio, Satellite, Navigation, BT and Aux. Aux is Kodi video / audio. Hate Android but just added second Aux of Android for Android Auto which works nicely.

Relating to at home audio now playing Dolby Atmos and Dolby Atmos speakers (Klipsch these days). 7.1 Unique speakers.

Still using a couple of Russound zoned audio device with a couple of remote controlled Jogglers on the rack for music or internet radio streaming.

Pete thanks for the helpful and interesting information. I had hoped to use the joggler to watch tv shows recorded by kodi (TV Headend with RTL2832U tuners). But as you found kodi to be slow I won't pursue it. However your post did gave me the idea of plugging a cheap HD video capture dongle (hdmi--->usb) with a chromecast plugged into the dongle for things like BBC iPlayer and Netflix. This works pretty will on a Dell laptop running Linux Mint and using the cheese app as the capture and display software. However cheese on the joggler ubuntu won't recognise the capture device. I think I will look at the forum every so often and have another go if/when roobarb! has found time to put up Debian. Kind regards, Robert

The O2 Joggler has no issues streaming SD video when I tested it years ago on Ubuntu 14.X on the Joggler. I would stream SD from an Axis SD Video server just fine. You can downgrade an HD video quickly using Handbrake. As mentioned above a HD Crystal mini HD PCie card in the Openframe 2 did work well for streaming HD back with Ubuntu 14.X and Kodi. Here use Handbrake on my Ubuntu and Windows 11 laptops. Mostly though for downsizing 4k movies to HD. Downsizing from HD to SD would create an easy to watch file for the Joggler with no mods at all.

I have issues here with the 2 camera drivers on my HP Elitepad G2 1000 running Ubuntu 20.04. These run Windows 11 just fine these days.

My Alexa show devices stream HD well and they do have a small footprint.

I picked up another Joggler (thanks @wildgill ) and am running this release on it (via USB stick).
My intention is to move my existing Joggler Squeezebox players to using this.
It is working well - except the WiFi connection seems to disappear after some hours or small number of days and does not come back until reboor.

I'm OK with a hack to workaround the problem. Is there a way to tell the WiFi stack to reinitialise (or whatever might be needed) X minutes after WiFi fails?

Make sure that there is no direct contact between the WiFi stick inside of the Joggler to the main board. I had cephalon tape on the wifi stick edge. It could be that the O2 Joggler is getting hot and making the stick hot?

Here using the original WiFi stick on one of the Squeezeplayers and it does fine. Well except for the sound crackling.

I’ve not taken one apart yet but maybe this is the incentive I needed.
Doesn’t feel especially warm though (back leg heat sink is attached).
Given that reboot has always worked (without power down), I still think a software glitch is more likely though.
