Internal Flash Failure

Post by jgildert »

Hi Guys, bit of a brief introduction....

I'm John, and if you can remember way back in the days of Tony Hoyle and the crew when we first started hacking the Joggler, I created a forum as if I remember correctly, one got shut down for using the O2 copyright name "Joggler" yadayadayada.

Anyway....
I've had my Joggler lying around for a while and occasionally tinker with it! - Well I was impressed when O2 gave up and allowed the OpenPeak default software to install.... after several frustrating hours of the O2 software not installing, I finally managed to re-image it with a fresh copy of O2, when-fore it happily installed the OpenPeak OS.... now after having it on for a short while, for some unknown reason, maybe a reboot or power cycle.....

The internal MMC is fried.....

So, I was wondering if anyone had any luck recovering one....

I've tried LOADS of things, including the BirdsLikeWires reflash tool, - which reports a dead Flash and also tried Zeroing the drive with IF and OF....
and tried with Gparted to no avail....

Therefore.... I was considering Baking it in the oven :)
Now I've baked a Playstation 3 in the oven before for recovery (which worked) ;) - so was wondering if anyone else had gone to this extreme :P

Sorry for the long post, can't sleep. Been on the night shifts!

JG!

I have one with a dead eMMC too and I've tried all the usual methods for recovering the eMMC, as you have.

By baking, do you mean something similar to running a RROD xbox 360 wrapped in towels so that the heat softens the solder and 'repairs' the broken joints? I don't know how hot the Joggler can take before the rubbery and soft plastic bits of it melt and I'm doubtful that flash storage can be fixed in this way. The flash storage is quite delicate in the Joggler. ^_^

I've put hard drives in the freezer and have been able to recover them after some time once or twice. Never tried baking them though.

You could also maybe try flipping a can of aerosol upsidedown, spraying and freezing the chip in question?

Are you stuck on O2 logo?
Have you tried the attaching a keyboard and blind typing method described on Birdslikewires site?
There is also the hot swap method (the one that doesn't involve putting it in with the Sunday roast :-) )
Hope you get it fixed
Happy Joggling

Reading post #1, it reads like the Joggler boots from the USB socket, so the EFI is OK - No need to hotswap.

Sunday roast & cryogenics. :D
