you won't be able to update to 14.04 without some tweaking of a few things.

I don't think you would notice much from updating the base os if just using xbmc.

I will continue to provide updates to xbmc on the joggler repository for 12.04 as long as I can.

Thanks BuZz for keeping it going on the joggler. My fresh install on the the same usb seems to be working really really well.

I'm curious to know... i used sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get install xbmc. How does it know to get the update from your repository?

It's a shame this os is discontinued. If I had the know how to shrink my updated image (it's on an 8g stick) and a way to make it available i would. There is the issue however that I can't be certain it all works as I only use a tiny part of it's capabilities.

Yep cheers , I did ask illiac the person who made this release if he had plans to update it and he said he might but that was a few months ago now :-( it would be great if we could see it updated to the new Kodi once it has a full release .

@ilovemyjoggler making your own release sounds like a plan :-)

@ilovemyjoggler - for the less tech savvy amongst us, can you please provide a step by step guide as to how one can update the v0.9 image to the latest Gotham 13.2 please?

Thanks in advance

When the new release of kodi is available it will be upgradable as this image uses my repository for xbmc (it is based on my ubuntu 12.04 base image). (so when I push out new xbmc for the joggler, it can benefit).

to upgrade the current xbmc on this image it should be enough to do this in a terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install xbmc

I did "sudo apt-get update" over telnet and it got stuck at 23% and was full of errors like "no address associated with hostname".

So I went for "sudo apt-get install xbmc" but it came back with "xbmc is already the latest version".

Help!

First check your version number by going to system and then system info (I think).

I had problems updating by telnet. Try doing it in Putty instead.

No dice. Still the same, not updated. Stuck on version XBMC 11 (Eden).

It's definitely possible to update from the illiac's final image. It's what I used.

Is your joggler connected to the internet via wifi or ethernet? If Wifi, connect with ethernet instead before you try to update.

I appreciate the help.

Not sure about illiac's final image, but I'm currently on Joggleri4_XBMC_v0.9.

Currently doing "sudo apt-get update" over Putty and wifi - on 26% with a fair few resolving errors: "security.ubuntu.com:http" [-5 - No address associated with hostname].

Yeah, that's the final image.

It should work. If it doesn't we can look at how to get you a copy of mine (but that shouldn't be necessary).

Sorted. The trick as ilovemyjoggler suggest was to connect and update over ethernet, not wifi. Thanks all.

Hi Pete , good news :-)
are you updating this image on the start of this thread or making a new one ?

Starting from scratch using BuZz's base build and updating it to Ubuntu 14.10. Updating it right now.

Well never expanded it and ran out of space. Will do it again shortly. Wow it was less than 2Gb. Expanded it to 8Gb for now.

Doing this on one USB SSD 8 Gb stick. Will thin it down after primary base build.

Recently just finished one running on an old Via 1Ghz CPU with 1Gb of memory for an automation server.

Adding a bunch of stuff got it to around 3 Gb shrunk.

Please suggest what would be nice adds to this build. I added Webmin to alleviate SSHing to the device and doing updates.

The WiFi manager bit that is in this xbmc os build is handy so you don't need to drop out of xbmc to sort the WiFi .

Thank-you hawsey, will do.

Just looked and prompted Joggler to continue with upgrade to 14.10.

A build that loads straight into xbmc like illiac's?

Not sure what new features are available but that had all the basics, so 14.04 with something similar to the original would be great!

Or were you going to have a desktop with an icon for xbmc? In which case squeezeplay installed alongside it would be good, but slower? Which is not so good.

Yes

Checking out running XBMC this morning and something appears to have gone amiss with my upgrade to 14.10 and graphics/GPU drivers.

I have upgraded 3 other Jogglers to 14.10 (ones with GUI) and these are fine. I will probably start over again and not upgrade to 14.10 right away.

I didn't notice any issues while upgrading. I installed light X windows which is working bu not looking right graphically. Trying the XBMCBuntu look.

Its probably cuz I went remote (using SSH) for most of the x windows stuff installation and the other ones did everything with a keyboard and mouse?

XBMCBuntu will boot and reboot into XBMC. If you exit it it will go to a very light desktop. Its really fast though and using about 3 Gb of the 8 Gb drive which is still way bigger than the original XBMC that I had at 2Gbs and put on the MMC (well Openpeak 7e).

Yup Squeezeplayer would work. Squeezeserver might slow it down a bit. I also use Squeezeplayer lite with no gui and remote it.

Checking the updated Joggler on my office desk and see while XBMC is working; its different. Yup; and graphics are not crispy.

Video information shows:
GPU: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.5, 128bits)
OpenGL vendor: VMWare, Inc

Well that is messed up a bit. So will be going back to original 14.04 builds (base and GUI).

Day - 2

Updated another Ubuntu 14.04 machine to 14.10. Noticed that the video drivers changed as above. Looks good. Found the following.

https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/u ... cs-drivers

Will try to downgrade first compact build of XBMC Ubuntu 14.10 before starting another build.

just to note: my 14.04 is not designed to be upgradable without some fiddling. Some packages are forced to the versions on my PPA for 14.04 and you may get conflicts with 14.10 packages.

Thanks BuZz.

For the time being leaving base build alone.

I was playing with Wine on the other three Jogglers and had not been paying attention to the graphical interface as much. Concurrently was turning them into little 2-way video telephones.

24th November, 2014

Started from scratch again. I would like to keep it to mostly BuZz's stock base build if possible.

1 - writing BuZz's base 14.04 build to an 8 Gb stick
2 - expanding build to 8 Gb initially (will shrink it for downloading afterwards)
3 - Expanded EFI boot partition some 50Mb. I get an error but it works still. Need to revisit this though.
Expanded it to a bit over 100Mb. Errors though. Went to disk manager and redefined it as an EFI boot partition; still getting errors though but boots.
4 - Installation of Webmin - just an alternative to using SSH and GUI.
5 - updating - 79 updates
6 - installation of a lite GUI (there are a few to choose from) - optional? suggestions?

Here looking at the LXDE (which is sort of what XBMC-Buntu uses), XFCE4 which is what Xubuntu uses. Open here for suggestions.

Decided to try a no GUI version first just booting into XBMC for a smaller build.

Adds list:
- Webmin
- XBMC - will leave it as is unless somebody suggests some tweaks to it.
-

25th November 2014

OK got it installed with no GUI. Boots fine right into XBMC. Got the little XBMC logo showing when booting.

I still see a bit of text when first booting, goes to the XBMC logo for a bit, blanks for a few seconds then to XBMC.

Ideally making all of the text see for a bit black might make it look a bit cleaner when booting.

Lost the exit menu context other than Exit (which just reboots it).

I can remove Webmin to make it a bit smaller. Attached is a picture from Webmin. It is a bit larger than OP one. I was able to fit that one on the 2 Gb MMC of the Openpeak 7e. I installed the LIRC drivers / stuff and it works fine with the Microsoft Media remote control and IR sensor. Its fast and touch works fine. There was a Joggler based Metro looking theme but it was for the previous version of XBMC. Updating to current stuff is easy using Webmin. Today will test out the Joggler Wireless USB stick functionality.
webmin.jpg
26th November 2014

Today will shrink it down to 4Gb and upload it somewhere for testing. Let me know if how this is working for folks.

Help...stuck here trying something.

I am trying to format a fat16 small 100mb partition in a manual effort here using GParted (making it bootable with LBA/Boot stuff). I keep locking up Gparted. I am OK with making it big then shrinking it. Any suggestions?

Answering my own question here just created a bootable EFI fat16 100Mb partition and manually copied the files. I now have a little bit less than 4Gb XBMC boot stick and will post that image for testing and suggestions.

Runs a bit slower on my 4Gb USB stick. Trying something new here. Download and play with it. Please comment on it such that I can tweak it some more. Sharing directories in MS and Google. See if this works.

28th November 2014

Not sure if anyone has tested the above build. Here playing a bit testing the wireless stick. Network-Manager GUI is present but with no options right now such that you have to do a manual thing with wireless. Wireless card is seen fine. The issue of not having a GUI present causes this issue I think? I did install network manager v.9 on the OS side even though there is no gui it installed fine. I still have the issue with the shutdown pieces although I did see them for a bit.

29th November 2014

Another build. This one using LXDE core (no frills). It is smaller than the last build at 2.1 Gb. Wireless is working via the Network-Manager GUI. That said the XBMC Network-Manager GUI is still not showing anything. That said it does work if you configure the network via the GUI Network-Manager.

29th November 2014

- created a second user called xbmc and made this user a sudoer. Note that xbmc password is xbmc and joggler pasword is joggler.
- made user xbmc autologin when rebooting
- made LXDE GUI autostart when booting box
note that LXDE is core with no options really except network-manager running.
- made xbmc autostart when starting LXDE

4th December 2014
- Curioius if anyone has tested the above links?

6th December 2014
- added Squeezeplayer to the base
- you can shift the autostart now from either XBMC or Squeezeplayer
- added a clock screen saver to base GUI
