Flash applications for the joggler

Post by dtnl »

Hello, first time post here having just acquired a Joggler from a friend who thought I might be able to do something with it since I'm a flash developer.

Have read a little bit about the architecture of the joggler but since I'm not a sys-admin, am not completely sure where to start. Basically, I'd just like to get some of the very simple flash applications that I build running on the joggler (i.e. simple clocks, twitter visualisations, traffic reports etc). Do I need to do this via a custom OS, or can I sideload directly into the normal Joggler software? Also, do you know what version of flash the device targets, or am I better off using Air under linux?

Sorry if I'm way off the mark, but it's been suggested to me that it's possible to run simple flash applications on the device. My plan is to install it as a little info panel (i.e. next bus/train etc!)/clock/photoframe next to my front door.

Thanks in advance!

Yes, it is possible to run some flash apps from the Joggler. Check out http://www.jogglerwiki.com/forum/viewto ... ?f=2&t=309 for starters. Shout if you need more info.

As a cheeky request, if you have any swf apps which you may think are useful for Joggler users, is there any chance of making them available for download to try out?

I've been playing with a new screensaver that fetches calendar entries from googlecalendar and displays the upcoming ones.
And has a digital clock (to keep things simple for now).
What i have so far works ok though it's early days so if you want any help then i'll see what i can do.
Theres nothing elegant about what i've done since Flash programming isn't something i've done before.

I'm building using the flash_sdk on linux if that helps

if i get something that seems to work ok (and is configurable ie not using hardcoded account info) i'll definately make it available if people are interested.

I would love to be able to give some of the SWF apps in the above mentioned thread a try but am afraid I lack the skills to do it :-( is there any chance of a simple mans guide /tutorial on how to do it ?
Would love to be able to gather a whole collection of these swf apps together and launch them via PNPIII :-)
Happy Joggling

Thanks, will give that a go later, looks awesome.

Here's an example of the kind of thing I develop: http://www.andrewdobson.co.uk/projects/wordclock/

Here's the path to the swf: http://www.andrewdobson.co.uk/projects/ ... mclock.swf if you want to give it a go.

You can install PnPIII and use the SWF Manager to test any Flash apps you have. If you have a URL for them, you just need to SSH into the Joggler and add the swf file URL to the url.txt file. If they work well you can add them as icons to the main user interface using the instructions on the link posted by offbeatdave above.

I've also got loads of games and stuff listed in a url.txt file on the above thread, but I haven't used them for ages and some of the links are now dead.

Just to confirm, this runs on the Joggler via the SWF Manager. Nice and 'arty' is the way I'd describe this. Nice work!

@dtnl - it looks like you could be a great source of new apps for the Joggler community, so welcome aboard and I hope you like your new toy. Your mention of a traffic app in your first post is very interesting; There used to be one on the O2 Joggler but the data feed stopped. It wasn't much use to me because it only showed the Home Counties (approximately) but its demise was lamented by some forum members.

Brilliant. Had some connectivity issues at work (no surprise) but working well at home now so will try to install pnpIII later this week and will start seeing what I can do on the platform. I've been playing with the TFL apis lately which are ace and I've also got some other bits that I can probably tidy up and port over once I've got it working. it's a really fun device, I don't get why it's not more popular!

Re: Flash applications for the joggler (Word Clock)

Post by NickC »

Hi, I have been gratefully running this beautiful word clock on all the jogglers around my house but have found that the date does not update unless I touch the screen to go back to desktop, once the word clock screen saver comes back again it reflects the current date. Not a big hardship so have been living with this for a few months, but when visitors go into a room where a joggler hasn't been used for a day or two its a real shame for this lovely code to be showing the wrong date.

Can any of you very clever guys help with this please?

HNY! :D
