Annual ALSA Appeal

Post by roobarb! »

Hey everyone,

I'd really like to release a base image which uses a kernel newer than 3.18. I have in fact had kernel 5.1 working very nicely. However, the only thing stopping me from doing so is the STAC9202 chip used in the OpenFrame 1 (Joggler) - the pin assignment is all to-pot, such that connecting headphones doesn't mute the internal speaker (it actually mutes the headphones you've just connected) and only one channel (left) is active.

In theory this is not the most troublesome thing in the world to sort out - pin configurations can be altered and ALSA reloaded - but I have had zero luck in getting a configuration which works, so I need somebody who has more than a rudimentary knowledge of ALSA.

If there's anyone out there who feels they can help, here is a link to the communication I've had with folks on the alsa-devel mailing list. Here's a link to some photos of the IC on the board, along with the spec sheet and here is a link to a test version of Ubuntu Disco running with kernel 5.1.3 - may as well work on the very latest. There are no audio kernel patches applied - just the backlight driver code, a tweak to make sure the backlight driver is used and a tiny patch for the I2C bus.

With the above and a Joggler to play with, I'm sure someone with better knowledge than I can figure this one out. If someone has the knowledge and no Joggler, I'd be very happy to supply one for testing.

Fingers crossed!

the rabbit hole never ends!

That is what I like about Linux more than Windows. ;)

Today's endeavor has been

1 - Updating Armbian on a TVBox server running with an Octocore ARM CPU. I am impressed with what these boxes can do (made up 3 headless Ubuntu servers now for automation)

2 - Got a BeeLink Pro last week with an Intel Atom CPU with 4gb of RAM and 64 Gb eMMC. Tiny thing. Here replacing Windows 10 on it with Ubuntu and using Oracle VB for a lite Windows 7 embedded for running speech. Also running Homeseer and Home Assistant on i and MQTT and Mono and on and on.
Purpose here is to install the server inside of my Leviton 42" can for a selfcontained network and automation thing.

BTW what should I test on ?

1 - O2 Joggler stock with modded NIC ROM and default EFI boot bios (O2 EFI rom)
2 - Openpeak 1 with 1Gb eMMC with built in ZIF, DECT and Zigbee (Avaya boot efi rom)
3 - Openpeak 2 with 2Gb emmc with built in DECT, Zigbee, RTC battery and mini PCiE combo WLAN/Bluetooth module (Avaya boot efi rom)

Definitely option 1 - just as stock as possible with the usual O2 or OpenPeak boot ROM. The OpenFrame 2 has a different (properly connected!) audio IC, so it works out of the box. :)

OK using a virgin O2 Joggler with no modifications.

Wrote hxxps://dl.birdslikewires.net/openframe/ubuntu/testing/ image to a USB stick.

1 - plugged in USB stick and keyboard to a USB hub
2 - booted fine
3 - did the update and dist-upgrade
4 - NOTE: not sure I am doing this right...just letting my fingers do the walking here.
5 - referring to this page: hxxps://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/UpgradingAlsa/DKMS
6 - apt install dkms
7 - apt remove alsa-base pulseaudio
8 - apt install alsa-base pulseaudio
9 - alsa force-reload
10 - ran alsamixer and see:

Thanks for digging in to this; looks like we're both seeing the same kind of thing. There's an ALSA tool, the name of which escapes me right now, that provides a simple GUI to making pin config changes to ALSA. In theory that's where the answer lies, so we'll eventually get to a new pin config that can be applied as a patch on boot, or that can be patched before compiling the kernel - it shouldn't even be too hard to have it added to the official kernel, looking at some of the submissions others have made in the past.

I'll try to remember the name of that tool, I'm sure it's no the ALSA website somewhere...

Yeah it's that pin configuration thing.

I got Microsoft sound working great for a bit on the heavily modified Openpeak 2 device (with Seabios) in XP.

I had taken out the motherboard there and modified it a bunch. Once and never got it going again.

Here with the O2 Joggler I am using an untouched Joggler with the original sticker over the back screws. I only have a couple of these today.

Have given away the rest of the O2 Jogglers these days and have just Openpeak 1 and 2's around.

New build works fine here on a USB stick. Tried to write it to the 1Gb eMMC on the Joggler and it did not work.

Currently it is not using much of the USB stick:

Code: Select all

root@openframe:~# df -l
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
udev 248124 0 248124 0% /dev
tmpfs 50456 4300 46156 9% /run
/dev/sda2 7574612 899632 6290268 13% /
I did configure it for a Dell laptop running Ubuntu with a STAC 9202 but it still works the same.

Googling hdajackretask. Looks like there was a gui for alsa tools called hda-jack-retask GUI for the desktop.

Installed it on my Ubuntu 18.04 laptop. Works. I did try to install a light desktop on the USB stick for the Joggler and it went to a boot loop.

OK so installed LUbuntu on the USB stick build.

FYI - a few weeks back here did update Buzz's build to Ubuntu 18.04 and all appeared to work except for Video which was using that virtual video drive.

That's the one! I kept diddling around with it and managed to change things but never fix anything.

Anyone who grabs this image should be able to install Xorg using:

Code: Select all

of-xorg-installer
Which automates pretty much everything - no desktop, just Xorg. You can then run:

Code: Select all

startx
From one terminal and then run GUI apps from another. Makes it easier to bring up / tear down Xorg if anything goes awry.

Thank you Andy.

Here starting all over again as I installed too many desktops and got caught up in the Netplan stuff even though I installed Vino and was using the remote x ssh login.

Made the build way too fat. IE: firefox runs and does play you tube videos with sound but it is way too slow...

I kept changing the pin configuration using above mentioned program.

Why did the sound configuration work fine when I updated Buzz's build to Ubuntu 18.04 a few months ago?

Here is a list of what I have done to get this going.

1 - wrote build to 8 Gb USB stick
2 - rewrote the boot EFI partition to fat32 and made it 182 Mb...using gparted and disk manager (in Ubuntu).
3 - expanded main partition to 8 Gb
4 - booted fine. SSH'd to it and:

Code: Select all
