Thanks, Pete. Hopefully, I'll still have 2 working Jogglers this time tomorrow. If not I'll be bidding on ebay again. :D

Strange that I'm able to cold boot with the NIC connected with that same image. Are you using the same EFI as me?

I used the EFI partition and XP patches from Dan's W2003 which might explain the similar behaviour for you. I'll make a stick from Dan's XP again and compare them.

I didn't compare the EFI's. I am using the EFI that was in your VHD image. On Dan's image; kept the image for the NTFS partition from the very first one and just changed the EFI's something like three times. First change gave me the 492Mb of RAM. I still do notice an occasional seemingly weird clock boot up at 199Mhz versus 1.3Ghz on Dan's build. I don't know why though.

But here they are. Yeah Dan's EFI will do a warm boot and cold boot "most" of the time even sometimes with the NIC cable plugged in and for whatever reason (which doesn't make sense to me) yours doesn't.

Ah; they are different EFI's. Interesting. Will try using the EFI files from the oldest running one to yours and see what happens.

I think that my xoj.efi was a newer one? I think I downloaded it from the original site or got it from Dan? I don't remember any more. Losing track (the age thing again - lol). This EFI though works with the USB stick inside and out and any of the three hubs I have. So always kept using it cuz I would plug my Lenova mini wireless keyboard into the 7 port USB hub.

OK so I copied the three EFI files from the oldest running Joggler to your last posted image EFI partition.

1 - Removed the NIC cable and did a cold boot. Booted up fine - no change in time to live OS.
2 - Next a warm boot. It worked! Very interesting. I only saw the O2 screen for a second or two then loaded OS. Fast boot. Went right to XP.
3 - Next I shut it down and plugged it into the 7 port hub with a keyboard dongle; just picked a port at random. Error NTDETECT failed. Moved the stick to another port. Same error. Removed the keyboard dongle. Tried again. Same error.
4 - Plugged the NIC cable in - didn't lock up first time; went right to the network.

I don't understand anymore; getting EFI confused now.

So no go for me with the 7 port hub. The difference though is that I've only used the Hub with memory sticks and not the SSD USB drive and the "in production" USB SSD its on the inside USB port.

For now will leave these three files in the EFI directory.

Here are the three files anyways; see if they are different for you; check out the warm boot thing.

Would one of these: http://www.ebuyer.com/259495-extra-valu ... s-up-cs532
With one of these: http://www.ebuyer.com/248352-kingston-8 ... ss100s2-8g

Not be a good solution? Would work unpowered and be pretty darned fast, I'd have thought?

That's a cheap SSD and I'm sure it would work. How fast it would be on USB, I don't know. You won't get the advertised read speed as it's beyond USB 2.0 data rate, but if you got write speeds of 30MB/s, then that's double that of a decent USB flash stick so it'd be quick to build. Not so expensive that it's a big risk, either.

Yeah, that makes much more sense now. As I've found, not all Jogglers are the same, HW and/or FW. So perhaps Eric has been coding for the ones he has which we then see as the different boot, reboot, NIC behaviour on yours and mine.

I'll put those files on a current build stick now and see what my Jogglers do.

Carled, yeah that's great. I buy a lot of kit from ebuyer. I've seen internal SATA drives that also have a mini USB socket on them too. From memory, I can't remember who makes them.

Will you be trying to fit them inside of the Joggler or are they just for external use?

I purchased a small ZIF case for the 1.8"/40Gb drive. The case though is still twice the size of the drive. The most difficult piece was connecting the ZIF cable. Think I got the case for something like $1 USD. I don't recall though what the ZIF drive was.

I ended up "breaking the shell" of my USB SSD to get it to fit where the WLAN USB device was. I think I posted pictures. The stock Kingspec is kind of oversized and double wide; so its not really like a little USB memory stick at all. The inside board is almost the exact same size as the wireless board. I just put tape on the ends of the antenna before installing the Kingspec SSD. The only piece that's difficult is once inside its not really easy to just wipe the image and replace it.

Mevi, yeah for a while Eric was posting different EFI files almost every other day. I lost track. He's a "cool dud".

It would be kind of neat to do a multiboot EFI with the choices in the OS; say in Linux just a point and click for an Android boot the next boot time; then in Android another point and click to reboot in XP mode. This way as you do not have touch access at the EFI level you could go from one OS to another. I guess even simpler would just be a script that manually moves the files from subdirectories in the EFI paritition would also work. Then just like three partitions on one stick would work (Linux, Android and XP (wintel).

No Pete - I don't want to lose the wifi from inside! Cables not possible into the kitchen at present, so it'd be external usb hub.

Those three xoj efi files are awesome if you do not need to use a hub, but will fail on a hub, for hub use i suggest using xojntldr.efi, xojmbr.efi boot.nsh, and startup.nsh. i acn post them from one of my earlier builds if you like?

Those old EFI files work as on yours, Pete. Quicker to run through the EFI section and I get warm boots just fine. Seems that there is something that stays resident in memory while the power is still connected as switching the EFI files back to the newer ones before rebooting also resulted in a successful warm boot. After a cold boot, that ability was lost.

The NIC still doesn't work on the problem Joggler.

I'll head over to Eric's page tomorrow to see if there are other newer or older EFIs that I can try.

For re-imaging the internal SSD, does the internal port have priority over the external port when it comes to booting? I mean, if you were able to boot off the external port, you may be able to image from a bootable Linux or xp stick? Even automate the process similar to Birds Like Wires reflash tool when all you need to do is add the new image to the stick and boot it.

if you don't use the internal space, it could also used, it is a little slower but imagine being able to have android on the internal, xp on the inside port, and maybe a linux distro on the on the outside port, all choosable with a boot manager.

I think i read somewhere that this could be achieved with plop boot manager, but not sure where i saw it.

And re the efi fiesi can post all the efi you would ever need, i have them all the way from the first to last, and my attempts at slightly editing them in betwen lol.

For a time I thought the internal USB port had priority over the external; but I really don't know for sure. All of the memory sticks, external drivers and USB SSD devices booted fine from the internal USB port. One of the things I noticed with that set of EFIs was kind of very short but discreet flicker or change in the overall desktop maybe 1-2 minutes after boot. I see it every time; but you kind have to watch the screen cuz its a really fast flicker of sorts.

Yes the boot manager sounds great Dan. I still have Buzz's distro on one of those little HP sticks. You don't even notice it on the side of the Joggler.

It would be great if the internal memory was on a microSD. On the chumby I just copied it from a 2Gb micro Sd to a 4Gb microSD and did all my adds to the main microSD. If I messed something up; I could go back to imaging a copy. Today I chroot to the external 2Gb partition; but it would fit fine on the internal drive.

So Dan all of those EFI files; are they just like modified little BIOS files; one doing one thing or another?

The efi files are more like diferent ways of booting the os, as efi has no bios to fall back to.

Dan, would it take you long to zip up those efi files and post em up here? I'm still yet to try booting the original PE ghost file you posted. I unpacked it only yesterday, but I'll look a it today.

It might have been me mentioning PLOP. I was trying to get it to chain from boot.ini on the W2003 build. Refit or EFI grub I imagine are best suited to a multi boot Joggler, I would think as PLOP isn't an EFI boot manage at this stage of it's development. Someone posted a brief howto on the W2003 thread.

How about using the internal memory to host the multi boot efi's, including Eric's? Perhaps then there'd be no need for the efi partition on the stick?

I already do that, I have refit installed which is the first boot in the nvram which gives you the keyboard driver enabling you to select which operating system to boot. refit will recognize any .efi file either on the root of the EFI partition or in /EFI/grub
so I use refit to directly boot windows and grub to boot ubuntu, android etc.

That's it Mick, sure it was your post that I read over on the W2003 thread.

While I'm pulling the guts out of my Jogglers today, I tried booting from the internal port - doesn't find the ntldr with the xoj-ntldr.efi, but does with the xoj.efi.

Pete, I suggested in a post above that that the external usb port may have boot priority over the internal port and my tests bear that out. With the XP stick inside and Ubuntu Server outside, the Joggler booted straight into Ubuntu.

Birds With Wires reflash tool includes the jogglerflash.sh script which makes reference to mounting the MMC, so perhaps it wouldn't be too difficult to use that tool but flash a custom image to the internal USB port. Nicely automated too.

Oh, and Dan. I read that the XBOX 360 HD-DVD drive add on is powered, has 2 spare USB sockets on the back and that it's bootable on the Joggler. Dimensions-wise, I'm sure the Joggler will sit on top. Here's a link to refresh your mind!
