I added the media center edition components to the build today, but i got the infamous black screen problem when starting media center. The drivers don't seem to support media center. I remember Dan suggested as much when I mentioned trying this before. I tried different screen resolutions over VNC to eliminate that as a cause. Maybe one for the future if we at some point get better drivers.

Starting again, I instead added the XP Tablet PC components, including the keyboard. That all seems to work, although I've yet to use speech or handwriting recognition.... no microphone input as standard, but I wonder if there is a point on the mainboard we can solder onto.

I'll have all the Windows Updates & hotfixes installed, ready for the next build.

Tablet runs well, but i think the resolution is too low for media center.

ha ha, I just edited my post to say that you had told me before that it probably wouldn't work. Different resolutions didn't seem to change anything, so I suspect it's the driver. I'll keep looking, but for now it's off the menu. :)

Well the next build will be XP Pro SP3 with Tablet Edition integrated. I still need to iron out some kinks and you'll find that the calibration of the screen will make your handwriting look like that of a 5 year old - I've tried my iphone conductive stylus and it's no better. A keyboard and mouse is still the best input method for XP, but the tablet components will get you out of trouble if you are running the Joggler without. The InScribe keyboard from the current build is easier to type on. The Tablet edition keyboard docks at the bottom of the screen and the running applications (and desktop icons) move up to accomodate it when it's on screen.

Shame about media center as it's quite customisable - the 10ft interface would suit the jogglers small screen. It worked in Virtual PC while I was testing at 640x480 and also showed a message on screen that the video driver was unsupported. I've not managed to find any fixes, but I'll keep an eye out. If it's possible to integrate tablet and media center components, I will.

Yeah i have included tablet input panel on my new build, look in tablet pc settings if you have them and there is a microsoft calibration app, seemed to help last night while i was playing with handwriting recognition! (but it does still look like your a doodling 4 year old lol)

I can't believe I overlooked the calibration in the Control Panel. I've been looking all over for something to do that.... groan. Yes, it works better now and I've placed a shortcut on the desktop. :D

Really anxious for a new build. Especially if it allows for touchscreen calibration.

Keep up the good work guys!

Give me a day or two to test it thoroughly. If all goes to plan, most of the left over issues will be sorted, plus some extra goodies and a bit of a performance boost. 8-)

You might see that Dan has been working hard on a new build which looks almost ready for release sooner than I and he is optimising his build for BALLS TO THE WALL performance!

Mine is more a balance of looks and useability. It's now tweaked to run better on a USB on a stick from the start, but as before, it'll be dead quick on a HDD/SSD. I'm not sure about Dan's build, but mine has WMP11 with the sharing capabilities it brings for those who want to use the media center capabilities of an XBOX360 or similar. I've yet to test the performance of that, though as the kids never stop playing on it. :D

My build I have scrapped windows media player, in favour of kmplayer which is alot lighter, if people like i can add a upnp media server to the build to replace that from windows media player. Also Mevi look into xbmc, use a nightly build for speed and touched beta skin and it rocks. (touched beta is the skin for xbmc ipad, but works lovely on the joggler)

you will need to use the swap trick, insert usb flash stick start win32 disk imager, remove flash stick and insert usb ssd, this way will write the image if your 2 devices share the same drive letter.

The bit above needs to be re-iterated. I had Ubuntu on an old Seagate Expansion portable hard drive which finally died. The swap trick had worked for me easily in the past but with my new Samsung portable drive I couldn't get it to work. Yes, you've guessed it ... it was the drive mapping that was screwing things up. I assigned the same drive letter as the USB stick to the Samsung device and rebooted; everything then went like clockwork. It had me foxed for a bit though!

Thanks guys, that was the trick I had missed. Good to see there is a separate thread for it now.
Is there really no utility that works without this trick?

Anyway got my Kingspec working now. :D

There's both IMG and VHD versions of my build. The VHD can be mounted in W7 disk management snap in and copied from that virtual disk to a physical disk: flash stick, HDD or SSD. Have a look at the full instructions in the first post. Have a look through the replies as someone mentioned other software options for VHDs.

Thanks Mevi, I'll try out the VHD approach. Up till now I've been using USB sticks, this was my first attempt with an SSD!
Still think it's brilliant, how many OS's I can now choose for this 'failed' product

Loads.

Boxee Box is based on Linux and runs on an x86 processor - one to port maybe. If I had any idea what I was doing, I'd rip the IMG file I got out of the 'firmware' update ISO and port it... but I know nothing about Linux. :D
