Satelite Navigation on the Joggler

Post by mickchip »

Finally got round to trying Sat Nav on the Joggler.
Used Mevi's XP as the base and iGO 8.3.1 PC navigation software.
At the moment just testing with a USB GPS dongle plugged into a four port hub

Very nice MickChip.

Here these days use my cellular phone for GPS as the one built in to the vehicles suck and basically worthless.

I can see the GPS coordinates while sniffing the bus except that it is not using standard GPS sentences.

I am running the same embedded as the Joggler OS on my car pc's these days and would like to give your option a try using the HU connected display.

Couldn't find an Audi TT in blue so just left this one on it.
It's much better than Garmin Mobile PC and runs very smoothly on XP.

Thank Mike.

Downloaded a few utilities for IGo.

Trying to change boot theme and noticed I cannot read the BMP files.

I have attached one of the utilities I found. There are a bunch out there.

Does your Joggler have an internet connection in the car for this to work ? Are you tethering from a phone ?

It's a standalone application, no internet connection needed, maps are in the usb stick.
All that's is needed is a GPS signal, provided by a usb GPS dongle.

Thank you Mike for the heads up on the USB stick GPS.

Here only have older serial GPS's and a few of those tiny bluetooth GPS modules around.

I also have a newer test tinkering GPS module in the attic that I use for my NTP server (does PPS too). This one has Bluetooth, USB and a serial port (well too it is programmable) for output at 4800/9600 and does a modified NMEA sentence. What is amazing about it is that the antenna is in the attic and it can get up to 15 GPS satellites.
GPS.jpg
The bus on two vehicles todays does provide GPS coordinates every few seconds but they are not NMEA sentences.

It'll be easier just to connect the USB stick to the Joggler / CarPC for this.

A while ago I am sure someone was tethering GPS from a phone for this sort of thing on the joggler .

I have an bluetooth OBD2 adapter which plugs into the car port and works with an Android App called Torque to give various car info like mph and revs , mpg etc , I wonder if this would work on any XP software so could be used together with this .

How are you powering the Joggler in the car Mickchip and what about shutdown ?

Torque only works on android, I also have it and a Bluetooth odb2, sometimes use it with my phone.
If you would like to have a play with GPS I am making an image of MEVI's XP complete with iGO8, it will be plug and play with the GPS dongle on ebay which is only £9.99 inc post.
This is for a standard EFI joggler ( not the coreboot / seabios one )
If you would like to download send me a PM. You will need an 8gb stick and it only has UK maps.

Link to USB GPS

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GPS-Smart-Ant ... 3641.l6368

The image can be altered to run on a coreboot joggler, you have to change the files ( ntldr, NTDETECT.COM, boot.ini & vga.sys ) to the original ones and the just delete the EFI partition.

This is what I am using to power the joggler in the car. It's a 12 to 24v input and 5v 5amp output.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Step-Down-Vol ... SwZAtXJofd

I have a switch on the input, so that when I switch on the joggler starts and when I've finished I have shutdown manually and then turn the switch off.

Thank you Mickchip! I got the image. And it boots alright.
However, I can not start iGo: When started, it states:
"Initialization error: Loadlanguage failed."
And it stops again...
Any ideas? (Note: I don't have the GPS dongle yet)

I will download it myself and test it, that way I can check that the image is OK.
Other than that I don't really know, it runs on my jogglers without the GPS plugged in.

Downloaded and tested, working fine with & without GPS dongle on two different jogglers.
If you can copy the iGO8 folder from C:\ to another stick and try it in your PC.
If it starts in the PC then it's your joggler, if it doesn't it's a bad image.
