Sounds cool Pete :-) yes there is some sort of interface that allows a Pi to use the car display but I'm not too sure I want that route , I'm thinking maybe a cheap Android tablet running torque and Bluetooth audio from that to the car at the minute .
Not sure though, main issue is the car display just isn't brilliant .
The Android tablet could be mounted in some way inside and took indoors at night .

It gets involved and typically not much is documented as the bus and whatever on the bus of the automobile is proprietary. That said automobiles have been using a serial bus for communications now for over 50 years. The whole video to HU stuff is safety locked so you watch television or movies while driving except for when you are backing up and enabling the back up cameras.

Sound is easy and just uses an aux audio input. More involved using the bus and aux input for controls of whatever audio device is on (using steering wheel / front buttons).

It is just reverse engineering the chit chat on bus. IE: you watch is with a bus sniffer. Push a button and what the communications and just emulate that stuff.

Yup; here the HU displays are only 800X480 pixel resolution on an 8"/7" wide screen display.

I have matched the icons / fonts / displays built in to the automobile. Any smaller icons / fonts would have me squinting at the screen which really is not what I want to do while driving. HD video playback is just SD which really doesn't matter for just watching content. Testing it with live/recorded 15 minutes of quickie news. This is sort of similar to what I am trying to do with the Joggler screens. The older automation touchscreens are simple, large icons and easy to use which is very high on the WAF.

BTW using the PC allows for better integration to the ODB II, regular BUS, LTE internet, bluetooth, et al type of stuff relating to the multitasking. Currently testing same application running in embedded windows in embedded linux. Both embedded OS's boot up from an small mSATA SSD. The media is stored on a 1Tb sata drive. When parked in the garage I can connect to the PCs via Gb or WLAN. Gb is way faster for multimedia sync.

IE: the automobile GPS chatters today on the bus (along with the integrated telephone). The software just grabs the GPS chatter and uses that for the GPS software on the PC. It also uses the GPS chatter for time syncing the automobile time.

The integration of the multimedia (audio and video) comes up as just an aux integrated device on the bus with it's own ID.

So now I've had my SqPlay Os Plex Joggler running away quite happily for a few months now but had never until last night added any videos to Plex as I mainly wanted it for music .
So far I've just tried a few kids animations and apart from a few seconds delay before playing they work great :-) .

@Pete , just noticed your reply about the car stuff 8-) sorry and thanks , oh the things I would do if I was retired ...
I am going to get a cheap tablet for the car for Bluetooth streaming and OBDII / Torque app and might also put a Rasp Pi in there at some point .

Cheers Pete. I've just today migrated this build on the USB stick to a 120Gig SSD plugged in to the side USB port I've not expanded the partitions yet ,baby steps as you usually say ;-)
My "big" music collection is loading up noticeably quicker now and I was able to stream some music synced to 3 Jogglers at the same time as my son watching the Plex server ....

@castalla helpppp please ;-) .
My / your Joggler running Squeezeplay OS front end running Plex server for music running now for over a year without a problem has hit a snag , self inflicted i fear .

I changed the usb external drive plugged in to the BT Hub 5 for a larger one and i was careful to keep the folder names exactly the same but it would not play music on squeezeplay or through plex , when i investigated it appears that the drive now shows as 192.168.1.254/usb4/MUSIC rather than usb2 !

I looked through the threads on the help you gave me on set up and think i worked out i need to change the fstab via win SCP so i found the fstab file and altered each usb2 to usb4 for the three folders MUSIC , VIDEOS and PHOTOGRAPHS however it will not save the altered file and i get an error Permission denied error code 3.
So now i am stuck , i also just had a thought , is it possible to just alter something on the HDD so that it shows as USB2 ? that would be easier if its doable .

I will be honest and admit that i have not touched Putty / WinSCP in any way since set up so have forgot most of what i was shown , sorry , also would altering the fstab be enough to sort this for both Squeezeplay and Plex ?
Another thing is that i have designs on using an Echo Dot to control Squeezeplay and or Plex , would i have to update to latest packages and if so how ?
Any help greatfully appreciated .
Thanks in advance.

Try preceding your edits of fstab with “sudo “ (without the quotes)

To edit within WinSCP you have to log-in as root. You must have set up a root account previously. Try username root and password root.

To use a Dot to control squeezeplay you'd have to install the habtunes Alexa plugin. It's a 'closed' alpha test program at the moment ... development to an open beta program seems to have stalled sadly.

Sorry, no ideas about Plex.

Thanks for the help guys , much appreciated , it's just Squeezeplay I'm mostly bothered with but posted on this thread so I don't clog up the main one
, I'll give this a try today .

Apple Music is not available on Plex Media Server. So there is not an official way to play Apple Music on Plex Media Server. But don't worry, you can download Apple Music to MP3, then you can transfer the MP3 files to Plex Media Server. For more tips, visit: https://www.drmare.com/
