PipoX8 as car PC

Decided to use my PipoX8 for my car PC as I have had some issues with my joggler one.
This means I can use both Win10 and Android.
Just waiting for a 12v car power supply to arrive from Hong Kong before I fit it.

Great idea Mick , is that Torque at the bottom on Android ,? It will make a neat car PC .

Yes it is Torque on Android, the x8 has Bluetooth built in so its ideal for my ODB Bluetooth dongle.
I am going to install the GPS dongle internally

Very nice Mike!

Will you be mounting the PipoX8 in front or in the dashboard of the Audi?

How will you manage the power shutdown and startup of the PipoX8?

Can you see the screen when it is sunny outside? Will you be installing some polarized screen overlay on the PipoX8?

Nice work MickChip :-) thanks for all the builds you did for the Joggler getting to this point .
What was the main reason you decided against the Joggler for this project ?
Thanks for posting the pics

No particular reason, it's faster, has 2gb memory, I can use windows or android, I can change the boot logo easily, it has 4 usb ports without using a hub and has bluetooth built in.
Also screen is 1280x800

Very nice!!!

The Pipo computers / tablets were one of the first to utilize the tiny Intel quad core Atom.

The Pipo X7 I have is velcroed to the back of an LCD computer monitor. With a wireless keyboard/mouse the footprint isn't seen

Very nice Mike!!!!

I see a bit of a Kodi flavor. Are you calling apps from your main GPS program?

Is the PipoX8 talking to the ORDII and the Audi Bus?

Are you using the steering wheel controls for navigation plus the touchscreen?

Yes,
Got ODBII bluetooth plugged in and it works really well.
I can control the radio from the sceen, swipe horizontal left & right to chage stations, up & down for volume.
Same if I am playing music, change tracks & volume.
Car doesn't have steering controls.
At the moment I'm using frontend which is a car fontend for android, but I could also use JVC remote for everything, (radio, music, gps and apps), choices.
Forgot to mention also have a reversing camera and a microphone so may try speech recognition.

@Mike,

Here still working on my CarPC. It currently connects to the Bus on the automobile using an intermediate device which I can see on the bus providing video to the HU and controls and navigation of PC menu (no touch on HU).

One OEM HU on one automobile is built in the lower part of the front console while the other HU is a pop up on the top of the console (which to me I do not like as much but it is in my face while driving).

The bus does have some engine diagnostics. That said though the bus does connect to the lighting, radio stuff, built in 3G stuff, car windows et al. The ODB2 connection would provide a better heads up display relating to engine functions.

I continue to utilize an old fashioned large ODB2 device and want to upgrade it to a full time WLAN (not bluetooth) ODB2 sensor.

I see a bunch available. I think too here I have a second OD2 Port under the hood.

Curious what you are using for ODB2. I have read that some of them are always powered on and do or can drain the battery.

So went searching here for one wireless one with a switch with really would be a PITA to use.

Thinking now of changing the car PC OS to Linux and using KODI as a base here and integrate a wireless space navigator in the center console for a bit more granularity (versus using the radio knobs).

Is there ODB2 software for Linux?

I am using a Bluetooth ODB2 with an on/off switch

Never looked for a wifi one, and didn't even consider Linux as a car pc os, I actually prefer Android over windows as a car pc os.
