Cheap Arduinos

Discussion for non Joggler hardware / software including software for devices that share similarities with the O2 Joggler Hardware. Cheap Arduinos

Post by Juggler »

Discovered this project a couple of days a go and it looks good. I've not had anything to do with startup funding before, and the project has already exceeded it's initial goal, so it is just a matter of seeing how much more they can get now. For $9 it is an awful lot for an Arduino Leonardo compatible board and a few extras as well if the $60,000 target is met.

I have not to gain financially from posting this. Just want to bring this to the attention of the Joggler community as I have some projects in mind which could use an Arduino and a Joggler. And from knowing the community, I think there may be a few people here that may find this of interest.

If you've any comments on this sort of project, would be interested to hear, as I haven't committed yet, but intend to do so at the moment. I've played with a PIC and that is as far as I have got with microcontrollers. I have a Joggler / small PC power supply project in mind that could use an arduino, plus I'd really like to have a good tinker with one.

I pledged to later versions of this project :

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/be-s ... best-match
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/9-ar ... lectronics

and I sort of regret it now. I think the people behind this are ok, and it seems they have had some unfortunate problems, recently.

I regret it because I have come across these :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pro-Mini-Modu ... 1057016324

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pro-Mini-Atme ... 0628954285

It would be cheaper without the USB to RS232 device. Some of the Chinese market places sell these arduinos in quantities for incredible prices.

OK so the arduinos from Indigogo have more on them, but for the core of the microcontroller I am amazed at the price that they are.

So as far as I know, the immediately above are the cheapest arduinos now.

Didn't buy any from ebay, but came across these on aliexpress :

I think I will go for these as I have an Emprex NSD-100 that I need to de-brick and I think there is access to the boot loader through a TTL level serial port, where I hope I can write a known good ROM.

The price of these arduinos at the moment is just a bit more than the price of a single set on uk ebay. Also don't forget that it is possible to get 1% cashback if you go through topcashback.com - that is the US site, not the UK site, for aliexpress.

Going to go for this one :

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-Shi ... 01992.html

Currently at $4.14 it is the cheapest I can find, and I need the USB to serial TTL dongle to some other work. I have an old Emprex NSD-100 that I foobarred by flashing it with the wrong rom, so I'm hoping I can get that back up. Still it will be a good learning exercise, even if the outcome is failure....

Looking at the photo of the Pro Mini in the link above, it looks like someone has held a soldering iron on the main chip way too long. Seems strange to me, but maybe that is the way of new tech or it is some weird clone and the identity is being masked.

Also, when I order from AliExpress I use the American TopCashBack website and get 1% cashback. None of the cashback sites in the UK offer this, that I have found anyway. Despite buying a fair few items from AliExpress, I now have nearly $1 !!! cashback. How I'm going to get it and what I can do with it is not something I'm going to concern myself with at the moment. It is just nice to know I'm not losing out !
