Way off topic - NHL?

Post by ilovemyjoggler »

Not really sure if anyone can help with this so I haven't got my hopes up. I have been bereft of NHL ice hockey for a while now since ESPN Europe lost their contract with the NHL to show live and recorded games (and channel 5 dropped it over 2 years ago). I don't suppose anyone knows of a way in which I may be able to watch the games, the US time zone makes recorded games much more watchable but live would be good too! The season usually starts in October. Since the loss of ESPN Europe I have had a look around but never really found an adequate replacement. I'm not into any other sport which is a major factor in things I may want to sign up for - and I don't have/won't have sky. Obviously I would like to be able to see the puck in motion so maybe not one for the joggler  Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

There's an NHL addon for XBMC. I've not tried it because it requires an NHL Gamecenter account, which is $4.95 a month.

Now that, my friend, is very interesting! Only niggle is I think in the past the NHL gamecentre wouldn't let me join as it could tell I was not in the US. Haven't tried for a while so will defo look into it. Thanks! Can you get xbmc on a pc or will I have to look at installing it on the xbox (god help us - fortunately I have until October to get it sorted  ).

Any other ideas for streaming NHL if this doesn't pan out?

You can install XBMC on a PC.
The Gamecenter registration page has a country drop-down, so I would assume you could register internationally.

In the distant past that registration page would divert to espn europe. However as that partnership no longer exists things may well have changed. Am not near a pc so will check it out later tonight. Exciting! Cheers!!

That's a relief!

Well blow me down - you are absolutely right. It certainly seems like Gamescenter is now available to the UK directly from NHL. Wonderful news!

Any use?
Oh yeah! And it's free!!! Already added to my favourites.

Will check out exactly what's available from both sources in October. Can't wait!

Thanks so much both of you. And I thought no one would be able to help. Should have known better than to doubt :D

@ilovemyjoggler - It's so good to see you learning stuff. I was like a rabbit in the headlights when I first joined this forum and I've learnt so much. It's great to see someone else taking a similar journey and learning the same things.

One thing you can be pretty sure of on this forum - if you ask a question and nobody answers, it's probably because nobody on the forum knows the answer, not that nobody can be bothered to reply.

@ Gegs: you're right, it really has been a learning curve for me. But it's not been easy. At times I've felt like I'll pop with frustration when I simply don't get it. I don't like to be beat. I think the shocking quantity of my posts show just how much I help i've needed. But it's a great feeling when it goes right! You've been a great help!

@ ilovemyjoggler - No problem! Any help I can offer has usually been learned from others on the forum, i.e. any thanks for my help is really thanks to the Joggler community.

Back on topic (on this off-topic thread) - there is also a Hockeystreams addon for XBMC. The costs do seem a bit steep though; the amount for 1 day is more than NHL's monthly subscription. It's more affordable for the year but if both this and the NHL addon work, it might be worth trying them both to see which offers the best service.

http://www4.hockeystreams.com/

I can't vouch for the Hockeystreams addon though. You'd need to give it a spin yourself.

I notice that http://www.vipbox.tv/ is one of the services scraped by the [removed] addon in XBMC. Install the addon then just choose vipbox from the list of options when searching for streams. It isn't listed on the googlecode page as a supported service but it was definitely there when I used [removed] last night.

I hadn't used [removed] for ages because my first use was less than positive, although the addon was fairly new then. I gave it another attempt and it was pretty good, for ice hockey streams on vipbox at least. I'll give some of the other [removed] services a spin when I can - but trying to to run Logitech Media Server on a Raspberry Pi with Raspbmc is my first priority at the moment.

vipbox.tv works well on the laptop (once you get past all the adverts). During an insomnia night I thought i'd see if I could get it on my phone. I was pleasantly surprised to see it load... and even more surprised when I was immediately redirected to a p**n site. Perhaps not one for the phone then.

EDIT: i've edited the word out so it doesn't appear on searches so the forum doesn't fall into disrepute.

I've download the addon for xbmc you mentioned - I don't think I'd have found it without your post as it's quite well buried. Cheers for that. Haven't tried it out yet but it will be interesting to see how it compares to the website version.

The kids go to 'rock project', where they learn from professional musicians how to play rock and pop. A while back, they had people voting for their favourite tutor. The webpage worked on a desktop browser, but from a phone everyone got redirected to porn. :D

@ ilovemyjoggler - Did you know that Xbox Live Gold users worldwide can now download the NHL GameCenter app? This allows subscribers of NHL GameCenter to watch live games, highlights and great games from the archive.
