securely erase Linux directory?
securely erase Linux directory?
I've upgraded my elderly Buffalo Linkstation NAS to a rather nifty Zyxel NSA310. Can anyone give me an idiot-proof way to securely erase the contents of the Linkstation's /share directory? I have ssh access. Thanks!
Re: securely erase Linux directory?
You are probably limited in what shell functions you have in your Linkstation, but if you have 'shred', that seems to be a good command to overwrite data in a folder. Personally I'd remove the hard drive and completely wipe the whole thing using one of the numerous tools for the job available, but maybe that isn't an option..?

Thanks - I don't want to break open the enclosure as it's heading for fleabay. Will look into the shred command. Would it be a matter of:
cd /share
sudo shred *.*
or something along those lines?

OK if you aren't prepared to open up the box, then it would be more a case of using any suitable command (from a Linux environment) to overwrite the network mapped and attached folder on your host computer. If you don't have Linux you could use a live CD to boot your computer, map the NAS drive then nuke the folder.
This post runs through some suggestions on doing that to a Buffalo Linkstation:

Re: securely erase Linux directory?
I was going to suggest removing the drive. I did look at swapping my 500GB for a bigger drive and it didn't look that difficult from my initial reading. Is it an LS Live, instructions here

OT what LS is it? I might be tempted to add a 2nd one as a backup and save you eBay fees. I was experimenting with installing LMS on mine last night and was convinced I'd bricked it, luckily it was in EM Mode and reinstalling firmware brought it back but it was a nervous hour until I fixed it. Phew

Thanks for the advice, I might give it a go.
It's this one http://tinyurl.com/d3tb6yx - 1TB size. I managed to install the latest LMS on it too so let me know if you need any help with that.

Well I'm definitely interested in that case.
Mines much older than that one and TBH I don't think it's up to the task.

I'll double check the model # when I get home but I'm sure it's a LS-CH1.0TL & will PM you then.
I compiled a guide to installing LMS at http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthrea ... post725170 if you wanted to have another go at it!

I actually think my dedicated SqPOS Joggler is more capable for LMS so I'm gonna stick with it I think.
