Flashed to O2 original. Unzipped to usb stick pnp3_v3.042 powered off joggler inserted usb. I have tried this twice with different usb sticks but pnp3 is not loading. Many thanks for your help , installed the ext4 image . expanded the partition and everything is working well,

Think your probably right but can I just ask best way to unmount , I just clicked ejectBuZz wrote:yes it needs to be run on an unmounted drive. if ubuntu has auto mounted it it needs to be unmounted. however, I suggest you just use the ext4 image and resize with gparted.

/mnt may well be the wrong location. Try looking in /media instead.
