So what exactly, does one do to reolve the problem ? I have commented out the two lines as shown in your post and it still gives the same error message. Maybe adding an option for changing timezone on first Squeezeplay startup would be great too

I have got the same issue with last build as I had forgotten to edit asound.conf after update.
Try to use simple asound.conf...it should fix your problem...
