Re: Ubuntu Bionic for OpenFrame

Okay folks, I've rebuilt my server on Debian Bullseye to support the latest images, which means Ubuntu Bionic will no longer receive regular updates. Standard support from Canonical ends next April, while Bullseye is expected to have support until June 2026. There will be no new Ubuntu based builds...

Re: Ubuntu Bionic for OpenFrame

Thanks very much roobarb!, this is some amazing work ! I've downloaded the image. Just need to find a spare Joggler to try it on. Would it be possible to share the image with the v5 kernel ? I wouldn't be using sound, so the ALSA issues shouldn't affect my use. Additionally / alternatively, do you h...

Re: Solder header onto Joggler PATA port

I've ordered what I believe are the right parts and hopefully they will arrive safely from distant lands. My greatest concern is obtaining the right socket to solder onto the board. Anyway, I'll find out eventually. When looking at an Orange PI PC recently, there is a very similar/same connector, al...

Re: NooElec NESDR Smart (Software Defined Radio )

When I did SDR on the Joggler, I used BuZz's Ubuntu 14.04 server edition, I think. It worked OK, I recall. I think I tried GQRX on BuzZ's XFCE Ubuntu and the Joggler struggled, especially on producing a waterfall. I had better results with an Android 4 tablet using some SDR app. I didn't look into w...

Re: NooElec NESDR Smart (Software Defined Radio )

If you use the server version of Ubuntu, i.e. no Desktop Environment, these are some of the RTL-SDR commands you can use (from the man pages) https://manpages.debian.org/jessie/rtl-sdr/rtl_sdr.1.en.html https://manpages.debian.org/jessie/rtl-sdr/rtl_adsb.1.en.html https://manpages.debian.org/jessie/...

Re: NooElec NESDR Smart (Software Defined Radio )

Just looked back over more of your posts. Easiest way to have microphone input would be to use a usb sound card dongle. This may be recognised in Joggler Android. Is there a version of Zello for Linux ? Looking at your pics above I saw Cleveland police. I recall listening to a more local to you, Cle...

Re: NooElec NESDR Smart (Software Defined Radio )

Hi Hawsey Not sure where you are now with this. I think the reason your not seeing anything when doing lsmod | grep dvb is that the buntu your using is a joggler buntu and not the full fledged 17.04 for desktop/server, which will have default drivers for DVB dongles. I've looked over the NooElec pdf...

Re: Solder header onto Joggler PATA port

Hi All Revisiting this topic after some time... Firstly, thanks Pete, for your info, despite my silence. At the time of starting this topic, I thought that instead of desoldering the required 40 pin ZIF connector from a board, as recommended, that it may be easier to buy the right connector, then so...

Re: Solder header onto Joggler PATA port

Some great stuff there Pete !

Any chance you could post some photos of what you've soldered onto the PATA port and from a few different angles ? I'm very interested to see what you've done.

Thanks

Re: Ham radio Joggler

If you bombard many types of electronic devices with Electro Magnetic Radiation (EMR) - radio waves - there will be weird stuff that happens. This has been made into a military weapon to take out the enemies systems. It may have emanated from the "Star Wars" programme in the Ronald Raygun ...

Solder header onto Joggler PATA port

The wiki article : https://www.jogglerwiki.com/wiki/Adding_a_PATA_port explains a great deal. But just to experiment, I thought, what if I just solder a header onto the PATA pads, then I can connect whatever to it. Admittedly there may be issues closing the joggler back up. I'm thinking I can find a...

Re: Ham radio Joggler

Given the Joggler's limited resources plus using USB for mass storage, I'd be inclined to use Ubuntu base and see if console applications are enough. In fact a few years ago this is exactly what I did with receiving ADS-B https://www.rtl-sdr.com/adsb-aircraft-radar-with-rtl-sdr/ I used BuZz's ubuntu...

You should check this out : http://www.computerconservationsociety.org/ I've been to some of the meetings over 15 years ago and it was interesting stuff. Most of the meetings are London based, I think. It's good though, that old languages I've done a lot of work in are still available under Linux. P...

Re: CB RTTY / PSK for Joggler .

Hi Hawsey - good to hear from you. Good to hear too that there is still some CBers active. Is this is in Northumberland ? I wonder if they use CB lingo, like the glory days of 70's and early 80's CB ? My two passions in radio are data modes and low power portable operation. Back in the mid 80s I'd w...

Re: CB RTTY / PSK for Joggler .

Hi Hawsey, Back in the late 70s and 80s I did quite a bit with CBs, including sending/receiving RTTY and SSTV on what was/still is the CB27/81 FM band. Wasn't legal and it created massive disruption amongst the local CB population. Conversations for the next few days regularly included the arrival o...

This was an old post, with recent comments. Didn't notice the age... Re: Ubuntu / Xubuntu for the O2 Joggler.

Thanks for the explanation BuzZ, of why my joggler flies. I havent noticed any overheating issues and I'm using a joggler with a backstand. I usually have the opposite problem of the joggler being too cold and having a "smoke screen" as it was once described. I wanted to try the infinity p...

Re: Ubuntu / Xubuntu for the O2 Joggler.

It should be possible without emgd - audio may be a problem too. Emgd could probably work against a newer kernel, but the binary blob part still needs an ancient xorg, so wouldn't be worth including it if going for up to date stuff. I don't have a lot of free time currently though due to other proj...
